History & Mission
Lorain County Children & Family Council
History:
Governor Taft’s Ohio Family and Children First (OFCF) Councils was a partnership of government agencies and community organizations committed to improving the well-being of children and their families. As a multi-agency umbrella for helping children and their families, OFCF focuses on bringing individuals, agencies and organizations together to better serve.
The OFCF cabinet council and 88 local county Family and Children First Councils were created to streamline and coordinate government services for families needing help for their children under Ohio Revised Code 121.37.
The cabinet council and the Office of the First Lady under First Lady Frances Strickland coordinates strategies and activities among Ohio’s departments of Alcohol and Drug Addiction Services, Budget and Management, Education, Health, Job and Family Services, Mental Health, Mental Retardation and Developmental Disabilities, and Youth Services.
All of the work of the state agencies and local partners is intended to result in better outcomes for Ohio’s greatest natural resource, our children. It is a statewide vision that impacts each household when put into context with past Governor Taft and now Governor Strickland’s highest priority – enabling every child to succeed. This priority led to Ohio’s Commitments to Child Well-being and the initial indicators selected to track our progress:
- Expectant parents and newborns thrive
- Infants and toddlers thrive.
- Children are ready for school.
- Children and youth succeed in school.
- Youth choose healthy behaviors.
- Youth successfully transition to adulthood.
- The Children and Families Council is a department of the Lorain County Commissioners who serves as both the fiscal and administrative agent.
Mission Statement:
“Works to advocate for families by establishing and maintaining systems of service that nurture, enrich and encourage collaboration between individuals and organizations to promote the well-being of children and families in Lorain County”
